Business Challenge
Burton Productions is a digital cinema production and photography company based out of Missoula, Montana, producing content for web purposes, advertising, film, TV, and more. A stable, high-bandwidth internet connection is critical to their operations. However, their existing cable internet provider’s shared coax connection was not delivering consistent or adequate speeds.
“We’re dealing with files that are Terabytes in size. And if a client wants their files immediately, we have to transfer them to our internal devices first and then upload them online for our clients. And getting a Terabyte online that fast, most people don’t have to deal with that problem.”

Blackfoot’s dedicated account executive, Jared Schmit, met with Burton and quickly learned that upload speed was their primary concern. Fiber was the perfect solution, and Blackfoot was working to bring fiber to the Stockyard complex where Burton Productions is located.
“We’ve always wanted fiber because we know what it can deliver and help us get our files online quicker. However, to get fiber, we would have had to pay upfront for the build, plus a pretty large monthly amount to maintain that connection. It was never feasible.”

Our Solution
As part of a special business promotion, Blackfoot offered to help cover the cost of the fiber build for Burton Productions. Blackfoot has several active fiber construction projects throughout the state, including Missoula, Bozeman, Belgrade, and Anaconda, with a goal to connect more businesses. Helping cover the cost of the build allows more businesses to benefit from fiber optics at a reasonable price.

The first phase of the project involved determining construction costs and bandwidth requirements for Burton. Blackfoot proposed 250M/100M service, 10 times faster than Burton’s existing connection. From there, it took roughly 60 business days for Blackfoot’s construction team to complete the build and turn up the fiber service.
The Result
Burton’s issues with latency and packet loss have been resolved. They have a hard-wired 10 Gigabyte fiber-optic connection and no longer experience any fluctuations in bandwidth. Plus, bandwidth can easily scale and be bumped up on the fly to assist with timely projects.
